오리엔트정교회와 동방정교회의 에큐메니컬 대화 = Ecumenical Dialogue between the Oriental Orthodox Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church

This paper examines the contemporary ecumenical dialogue between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Orient Orthodox Church. These two Orthodox Churches had experienced some 1500 years of separation from the time of Christological controversy in the Council of Chalcedon (451) until the recent past. First, the historical background of the bilateral dialogue is provided. Second, a series of unofficial theological dialogues as steps to reach the unity in Christology, which had in earnest started in the 1960s onwards are reviewed. This shows the procedure of this significant ecumenical dialogues between the Chalcedon and the so-called ‘Miaphysite’ Church. Third, the main texts of the agreed statement announced by the Second “Joint Commission of the (Eastern) Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox Church” in 1989 are presented and analyzed. The aim is to look for the dogmatic factors in Christology that created a critical point for the successful result of producing the official agreed statement, while considering the practical perspective that there was a sincere openness of ecumenical attitude all alongside this road of ecumenical dialogue. The statement shows that the key to the unity is that both Churches recognize the formula of Cyril of Alexandria, Theotokos and the four formulae of Chalcedon. Furthermore, the neo-Chalcedon term “Synthetos Hypostasis” made the junction where the bilateral dialogues meet and complete the doctrinal debate to open a new chapter.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 칼케돈 공의회(451)의 기독론 논쟁으로 입장이 갈라진 이후 1500여년 간 단절되었던 동방정교회와 오리엔트정교회 간에 이루어진 현대 에큐메니컬 대화를 살펴본다. 첫째로, 양자 간 대화의 역사적 배경을 제시한다. 둘째로, 기독론 일치 선언이라는 열매를 맺기까지 일련의 비공식 대화를 포함한 상호 간의 에큐메니컬 대화의 전개를 정리한다. 셋째로, 1989년 제2차 공동위원회가 발표한 공동선언문의 주요 내용을 살펴보고 분석한다. 교회사에서 괄목할 만한 연합과 일치가 성공적으로 이루어질 수 있었던 것은 개방적이고 성실한 에큐메니컬 대화의 자세라는 실천적 관점을 염두에 두면서, 동방정교회와 이른바 단성론파 교회인 오리엔트정교회의 기독론 논쟁이라는 교리적 관점에서 양자가 발표한 공동선언문의 성과를 도출해 낸 요소들을 찾아본다. 공동선언문은 무엇보다 기독론 용어 사용의 차이는 본질적인 신앙의 차이가 아니라는 점을 분명히 하면서 그들이 공통의 신앙유산을 물려받았고, 일치하는 공통의 신앙을 지키고 있다는 점을 밝힌다. 그것은 키릴로스의 정식을 기초로 하며, 테오토코스, 칼케돈의 네 가지 정식을 양자가 인정한다는 지점에서 드러난다. 그리고 “Synthetos Hypostasis”라는 신칼케돈적인 개념을 사용하여 그리스도의 신성과 인성의 결합을 설명하고 있는 지점이 양자간 대화에서 기독론적 일치를 완성할 수 있었던 핵심이라고 볼 수 있다. 이 공동선언문의 발표는 교회 간의 뿌리 깊은 갈등과 오해를 낳은 교리 논쟁을 마무리하고 새로운 장을 여는 역사적이고 상징적인 사건이었다.
