This study analyzed 87 actual documents of Byeonjeungrok(病症錄) of the Joseon Dynasty from an ancient book perspective, and analyzed actual use of Byeonjeungrok through government and private documents. Byeonjeungrok is a document written and sent to medical personnel for the purpose of medical counseling or medical treatment by writing personal information, past medical history, medical history, and symptoms of the disease.
In the private sector, Byeonjeungrok was sent enclosed with or alone through the patient’s network, and the patient brought it with him/her. The royal family found that when a royal member of the royal family prepared and sent Byeonjeungrok at the request of Royal medical staff and prescribed it based on this, and that Byeonjeungrok was replaced by the royal physician’s seogye (醫官 書啓) when a royal member or deputy requested medicine or reported illness was reported.
In the form of documents, the document could be classified into two types: the sheet of ByeongJeungrok and the glued ByeongJeungrok. Components include terminating words that request medical history and prescription of medicine, based on personal information such as gender, birth year, age, etc. of the patient. It showed similar characteristics to the typeface document, and it was confirmed that the medical personnel’s pharmacy visit was prepared in advance during the preparation process. ByeongJeungrok was written in Chinese, Korean, and Chinese characters, especially Hangeul, which was efficiently used to describe the disease of children and women.
This study is meaningful in that it reflected the historical and medical history of the Joseon Dynasty by analyzing the ByeongJeungrok widely used during the Joseon Dynasty from an ancient book perspective and revealing the historical value of medical documents.
