Why has the regional integration in East Asia been so stagnant compared to that of Western Europe? This paper aims to answer to this question through a historical recasting. Bringing the U.S. geostrategy into focus, this paper aims to shed new light on this question. Many previous studies has already proved that the East Asian regional network was formed with a close relationship with the U. S. Cold War strategy. However, not much attention has been paid to the relationship between the regional network formation in Western Europe and that of East Asia. Based on new historical evidences, this paper is arguing that the Western European experience of regional integration, not only its success but also its limit, have had influence on the U. S. East Asian policy. European decision makers wanted the U. S. to recognize the necessity of European colonial order in East Asia for the success of European regional program. Some Europe firsters in the U. S. agreed with this argument. But, instead of Western Europe, Japan has emerged as the apex of the U. S. supported regional scheme due largely to the War in Korean peninsula initiated by North Korean Communist leaders on 25th June 1950.
