세계댄스스포츠의 발달에 관한 고찰(考察) -민속댄스(Folk Dance)로부터 댄스스포츠(DanceSport)로의 명칭변경 과정을 중심으로- = The Study on the Development History of the World`s DanceSport

The purpose of this study lies in the need to present the meaning of DanceSport in terms of sports history through examining its development history, as well as changes of the DanceSport in terms of times, with regard to how it has changed and developed as the Western culture. The main reason to carry out this study is that our DanceSport (at first, it was called a Ballroom Dance or Social Dance), launched as a sociable means along with the introduction of Western culture in the 1900s, was evaluated as corruptive and unsound entertainment, not being in line with the concerned times such as the past military governments and Confucian ideas; however, the DanceSport has been developed to be adopted as a game in today`s Olympics. The studies on the DanceSport so far have just presented the situation of DanceSport and problems in terms of physiology, social studies and psychology. Some other studies have just presented the history of the world`s DanceSport partially for the establishment of theories and concepts, not investigating systematically and comprehensively on the basis of time background. Accordingly, research on the development history of the world`s DanceSport is essentially required, since DanceSport has been proposed to be adopted as a subject in the primary, middle and high schools, as well as a social sport and elite sport. With the above-mentioned purpose, this study has been carried out via technical history research in such order as the development process of the world`s DanceSport, the process to be acknowledged as a game of Olympics and the outlook to be adopted as a regular sport event in the Olympic Games, based on the research of literature. Accordingly, the following result has been acquired: As a result of researching the development history of the world`s DanceSport, centered on the name change process from Folk Dance to DanceSport, the DanceSport began based on the Folk Dance as a popular play, and it was equipped with a systematic form as the dance of art through Court Dance of the aristocracy. Through name change process like Modern Dance and Ballroom Dance in the modern age, the DanceSport has been acknowledged as an international sport. The DanceSport is rated as having the highest possibility to be adopted as a regular game in the 2012 Olympics, compared with other sports received authorization through IOC. To be adopted as a regular game in the Olympic Games, new regulations regarding the adoption standard for the number of NOC members should be suggested, in consideration of the method to secure the number of NOC`s in accordance with the Olympics Charter, which was revised in 1990, and unique feature of this sport that a man and a woman should compose a couple as a team.
