Since 1962, Codex Alimentarius Commision has been establishing standards, specifications, guidelines, and texts in order to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade. Basically, CODEX standards are not mandatory technical standard to all countries. However, it is stipulated that all members of World Trade Organization shall be complied to CODEX standards relating to food additives, veterinary drug and pesticide residues, contaminants, methods of analysis and sampling in the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures. The status of CODEX standards is being changed to technical standards indirectly and becoming critical in trading food worldwide. Therefore, Korean authorities related to foods and food industry should focus their concernings to elaboration of CODEX standards and participate actively all kinds of CODEX meetings with initiatives.
