Traditional manners, sacrificial rites and ceremony have been preserved well and very precious compared even to the Um and Yang and five elements in Feng Shui. The purpose of this study is to consider traditional sacrificial rites in part and cases that applied the Um and Yang and five elements.
As for Yemyo(禮廟) and Sinju(神主 spirit tablet), Yemyo means Sadang(祠堂 ancestral shrine) called in Jujagarye(朱子家禮) distinguishing it from Royal Jongmyo(the Royal Ancestors' Shrine). Therefore Sadang is a house in which high officials and common people put their ancestor's spirit tablet to perform ancestral rites.
Ceremony of Sadang has the form of sacrificial rites with 5 Ye(禮 manners).
First, it is Sinalnye(晨謁禮) that means entering into Sadang through single gate and burning incense before bowing two times as a morning greeting.
Second, it is Churipnye(晨謁禮) that means reporting somebody is coming in and out.
Third, it is Chamnye(參禮) that means the ancestral rites performed in Sadang on Dongji day, the first day of a month and the fifteenth day of a month.
Fourth, it is Cheonsinnye(薦新禮) that means preparing food for national holiday to serve Sadang on such days as Cheomyeong, Hansik and Jungyang.
Lastly, it is Goyurye(告由禮) that means the ceremony performed when something like happy event or repairing Sadang happens at home.
Singu is the symbol of the deceased that the chief mourner sets and serves it on Uje day after completing the funeral. Private house(私家) makes a Sadang(祠堂) or a Gamsil(龕室) to put the Sinju of the family ancestors in it.
Service of Sinju changed from the system of Somok(昭穆) to the system of Seosang(西上). Somok is the method to serve Sinju at left and right in turn. Setting the most respectable rank at the center, there is So(昭) to the left side and Mok(穆) to the right side. Seosang means putting the most respectable rank at the West, to the right side.
Generally during alive, the red color that symbolizes the Yang is applied to man, while the purple color that symbolizes the Um is applied to woman. On the other hand, application is reverse to the deceased, and the purple color is applied to Man's Sinju, while the red color is applied to Woman's sinju.
The procedures of Ohyangdaeje(五享大祭) out of Royal Jongmyo(the Royal Ancestors' Shrine) sacrificial rites are described. First of all, Ohyangdaeje(五享大祭) means the ancestral sacrifices served at Jongmyo 5 times a year and is divided into Chunhyangdaeje(春享大祭), Hahyangdaeje(夏享大祭), Chuhyangdaeje(秋享大祭), Donghyangdaeje(冬享大祭) and Naphyangdaeje(臘享大祭).
In Gije(a memorial service held on an anniversary of death) of a private house, the procedures are Jaegye(齋戒), Seorwi(設位), Jingi(陳器)·Guchan(具饌), Gwolmyeong·Sukheung(厥明夙興)·Seolsogwajuchan(設蔬果酒饌), Jilmyeong(質明), Yesadangbongsinju(詣祠堂奉神主), Chulchwijeongchim(出就正寢), Chamsin(參神)·Gangsin(降神), Jinchan(進饌), Samheon(三獻 - Choheon:初獻, Aheon:亞獻, Jongheon:終獻), and then Yusik(侑食), Hapmun(闔門), Gyemun(啓門), Sasin(辭神), Napju(納主), Cheol(徹) and Eumbok(飮福) in order.
As for sacrificial robes and sacrificial vessels in royal family of Joseon dynasty, robes of officiant at rites composed of Gwan(冠), Bok(服), Gyu(圭) or Hol(笏), while the sacrificial robes of civil and military officer composed of Yanggwan(梁冠) and Ui(衣). As for costumes of guard military officer, there are types like Jurip(朱笠), Cheollik(帖裏), Hwando(環刀), Tonggae(筒箇), Deungchaek(藤策), Mokhwa(木靴) and Ipsik(笠飾).
As for Gwan(冠 Crown), it is classified into Chinjesi(親祭時) and Seophaengsi(攝行時). In Chinjesi, the king wears Wonyugean(遠遊冠) in person and dresses Myeonbok(冕服) before taking part in the ancestral rites just before its beginning. Bok(服) is classified into costumes of the king, the civil and military officer and the guard military officer. Costume of the king is composed of Myeollyugwan(冕旒冠) and Gonbok(袞腹), and the Gonbok is classified into Ui(衣), Sang(裳), Daedae(大帶), Jungdan(中單), Paeok(佩玉), Hyeokdae(革帶), Su(綬), Bangsimgongnyeong(方心曲領), Pyeseul(蔽膝), Mal(襪) and seok(舃).
Concerning the symbolism implicated in Jegi, besides the Um and Yang in Jegi, there is already the trace of the Um and Yang and five elements in Jinseol. In Gyoteuksaeng(郊特牲) of 『Yegi』, What is dished out in Jeongjo(鼎俎) is animal(flesh-meat), and animal is Gisu(奇數) belonging to Yang out of the Um and Yang and five elements. Though some meats are dished out in Byeondu, mostly it is vegetation(greenstuff). The vegetation was called Usu(偶數) as it symbolized the Eum.
This research considered sacrificial vessels and sacrificial robes compared mostly with the Um and Yang and five elements. In conclusion, the sacrificial vessels and sacrificial robes are used for commemorating and serving the deceased and that is why more heart and soul is put on them.
