Plutarch showed different viewpoint about Alexander in the ‘Alexander’ in Parellel Lives and ‘On the Virtue and Fortune of Alexander m Moralia. One showed Alexander as a great hero but somewhat critic about his nature and behavior. The other showed eurocentristic viewpoint as a philosopher in civilizing Asia. And ‘Alexander’ in Parellel Lives estimated him as a beloved by gods, but ‘On the Virtue and Fortune of Alexander in Moralia estimated him a overcomer by virtue on goddess of fortune in obstructions by her.
This divergence was started by difference of goals of the two. The former was a part of Parellel Lives to give instruction to readers, in that means, Plutarch should refer some weak points of Alexander. But the latter was a lecture to general audience of Rome, in that means, Plutarch should not use weak points. Besides, he was an elite intellectual in a colony of Roman Empire, so he wanted to stress Alexander’s great achievements as a hero of his homeland. And the peculiarity of lecture made stress dramatic episodes for emotional response of audience. Plutarch was a public writer not strict historian, in the treatment about historical figures.
