ABSTRACTSomerset Maugham and Katherine Mansfield make rather a sharp contrast between
them. Maugham admitted himself he is an artificial writer, not a natural one, Knowing
his physical. spiritual. spiritual as well as characteristic limitation he tried to rediscover
the human nature by reading, traveling, and widening his various experiences in life. To make the most of the uncommon fact that to be born in this boundless universe, he
tried to weave elaborate. complicated. or beautiful pattern of life which was interwoven
with the warp of his true onlook on value and the strand of his esthetic sense.
Intending to get out of a monotonous
everyday life he tried to offer his reader various aspeats of life by seeking his matirials
for novel outside him. On the other hand we may say that Mansfield was born to become a writer.
Her equipment was suited to express various kinds of sentiments felt in her limited
private life with good insight. not suited to weave colorful and complicated human
pattern into a large-sized work. Though it is the eternal theme of literature what to pursue in a novel we may say that
Maugham attached much importance to story and Mansfield to the expression of life's
profile. Consequently. the fact that Mansfield left no novel and Maugham not a poem shows
vividly the difference of literature between them.
