Marathon race has recently become a very popular physical activity among Koreans. Marathon has a historical meaning in Korea, though its practice was limited to a very few elite sportsmen. However, common people began to enjoy this sport in late 1990s, and from 2000 on, the number of marathon amateurs increased rapidly.
The purpose of this study is to examine the reasons of this rapid growth and to ponder upon its sociological meanings. The study is composed of four parts. First, we make a general survey on historical trends of leisure activities for the middle-aged Koreans, focusing especially on the advent of new types of leisure activities. The second part is going to analyse, on the basis of statisticaI figures, the position of jogging and marathon occupied in the spectrum of physical training. The third part will examine different types of marathon runners and seek the reasons of rapid growth of this population. And in the last part, we will consider sociological meanings contained in the marathon running, such as the closer relationship the middle aged seems to maintain with this physical activity, the influence of their stoic aristocratism and the neo-tribalistic nature of marathon amateurs clubs.
