한·일 감정·심리 오노마토피어 의미확장 패턴 분석 = The Analysis of Meaning Extension Patterns in Emotional/Psychological Onomatopoeia in Korean and Japanese

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims to identify onomatopoeia which represents human emotions and psychological conditions, labeling it as “emotional/psychological onomatopoeia.” It also attempts to analyze the patterns of meaning extensions in both Korean and Japanese emotional/psychological onomatopoeic expressions that correspond to the five semantic domains of “tension, surprise, fear, anger, and nervousness.” The result of this study shows that the images stemming from a person’s physical senses extend their meanings to represent his or her emotions and mental states. In Korean and Japanese onomatopoeic expressions, however, some differences appear in the senses as to which meaning extensions occur. The only exception is the emotional/psychological onomatopoeia related to anger, in which case both Korean and Japanese onomatopoeic expressions tend to extend the meaning from a burning fire or an outburst of energy to a figurative expression of anger.
