This study was conducted to measure functional properties on the MeOH extract of the aerial and roots parts of zizania latifolia Turcz. Antioxidant activities by DPPH radical scavenging, nitric oxide (NO) scavenging effect and tyrosinase inhibition activity in vitro system were evaluated. The result indicated that ethyl acetate fraction from the root parts (REA) of zizania latifolia Turcz. contained high level of total phenolic compounds (159.47±2.85 TAE µg/mg). In addition, IC50 values of REA on the DPPH radicals and nitrite were 153±96 µg/mL and 736.53±47.49 µg/mL, respectively. However, ethyl acetate fraction of the aerial parts (LEA) of Zizania latifolia Turcz showed tyrosinase inhibitory activity (IC50=155 µg/mL) higher than ascorbic acid (IC50=329.9 µg/mL). The data indicated that REA has stronger antioxidant activities and highter phenolic contents than other fractions, and LEA showed tyrosinase inhibitory activity higher than ascorbic acid. Therefore, it was concluded that the root parts of Zizania latifolia Turcz can be a useful source of natural antioxidant for foods or cosmetics, and the ethyl acetate (EA) fractions from arial parts of Zizania latifolia Turcz may be a candidate for cosmetic use.
