21세기에 읽는 17세기 위기 - 17세기 위기 논쟁의 기후사적 재고 = Reading the 17th Century Crisis in the 21st Century: The 17th Century-Crisis Debate Revisited from the Climate Historical Perspective

국문 초록 (Abstract)

왜 다시 17세기 위기인가? 최근의 기후과학 연구들은 17세기가 소빙하기의 가장 혹독한 시기였다는 데 대체로 의견일치를 보고 있다. 그러나 기후적 동인은 홉스봄이 촉발한 17세기 위기론에서 처음부터 빠짐없이 중요하게 언급되어왔다. 우테르스트룀과 라뒤리는 기후사의 태동 과정에서 중요한 이름들이다. 이처럼 기후사적 관점이 역사서술에 개입한 지 오래지만, 기후사 서술에서 기후결정론적인 인식 전제와 방법론적 오류들은 좀처럼 수정되지 않고 확고하다. 2013년 출간된 파커의 역작 『글로벌 위기』는 날로 기후위기가 심화되고 있는 21세기에 17세기를 재방문하는 것이 얼마나 시의성 있는 중요한 일인지 상기해주었다. 그러나 파커의 책을 포함해서 가장 지배적인 기후사 서술방식은 여전히 재난형 서사이다. 본고는 17세기 위기론을 창으로 삼아서 17세기 위기를 기후사적 관점에서 서술하는 문제를 재고하고자 한다. 아울러 17세기 위기는 기후의 지역적 다양성이 아니라 사회문화적 다양성과 광역적 연결성을 충분히 고려할 때 비로소 제대로 설명될 수 있음을 주장하고자 한다.
