하나의 서양미술사 개론서를 통한 미술사 교육에 대한 소고

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics, the implications, and the limitations of the perspective of E. H. Gombrich in The Story of Art, and suggest future directions for art education. The analyses in the present study found that the Gombrich’s perspective in The Story of Art described Art History as a problem-solving procedure, and emphasized representations by perceptual selection and schematization. It also criticized psychoanalysis, relativism and historicism, and provided an alternative perspective for interpretation. Gombrich’s work expanded the paradigm of
art appreciation by focusing on cognitive process, context, background, and interdisciplinary collaborations. However, his perspective is also limited due to bias in selection of artwork, lack of distinction between the humanities and experimental science, and overemphasis in artist’s intention, schema, and representation. Together with appreciator-centered education brought by Post-modern society, a new perspective for future art education seems required. The present article suggested several future directions such as providing multiple interpretations from different
perspectives at the same time, trying to connect to students’ lives, and combining art history with art practice.
