Daily hassles, family cohesion, adaptability and well-being of mid-life couples were examined.
The sample was 252 mid-life couples living in Seoul, whose age is from 40 to 59, and whose last child is older than 13 years of age.
Each participant was administered daily hassles scale, cohesion and adaptability scale and well-being scale.
The main results were as follows :
1. Mid-life couples experience future security hassles most frequently.
Wives experience daily hassles more frequently, and the perceived stress level of wives are significantly higher than husbands.
2. There is no significant difference between husbands and wives in adaptability, but cohesion level of wives are significantly higher than the husbands.
3. The well-being score for husbands is 3.66 and 3.58 for wives.
This implies there is no significant difference between couples.
Especially family cohesion turned out to be the most important variable on the wellbeing of couples. Besides this predictor, aging symptoms, future security, environment, time pressure hassless are significant predictors for husband's well-being.
As for wives well-being, household, interpersonal, caregiving for aging parents, work hassles are significant predictors.
