국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문에서는 식민 지배정책과 시민지의 도시 공간 재편성 작업 사이의 갈등과 논란이 각 맥락 속에서 어떻게 다르게 적용되었는지를 살핀다. 그리고 시간의 전개에 따라 식민정책이 변화하면서 그것이 다시 도시 공간 형성작업에 어떻게 이전과 다르게 대입되었는지를 살피고자 한다. 사례로 선택된 것은 아랍 이슬람권이라는 공통적인 문화적 배경을 가진 북아프리카에서 프랑스 식민 지배 경험을 거친 나라들 중 알제리와 튀니지 각각의 수도인 알제와 튀니스 시에 대한 식민지 도시정책 사례다. 여기에서는 다른 문화를 만나 지배하고자 하는 세력이 타자의 문화를 자신의 문화와 관계시켜 어떻게 해석하는지가 드러날 것이다. 특히 근대성의 개념을 자신과 상대방에게 어떻게 적용하고 연결, 혹은 분리시켜 지배의 문화적 정당성을 만들어내는지가 관찰, 논의될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The notion of cultural difference can be used as a political tool, which exploits the sense of superiority and inferiority in the colonial context. But dominators do not always directly enforce their own culture to the dominated group. The French colonial regime claimed itself, for example, as the protector of Moroccan traditional culture. In this way, the French rulers proclaimed the 'conservation' of old urban structures, in the name of 'the respect of local islamic tradition'. On the other hand, they have built several new cities for the French colonizers, using a thoroughly new and modernized version of urban planning. But the relationship between the two cultures, and between the two different urban structures, could not work in harmony. The sense of cultural dominance with the urban planning politics was not very clear neither for the colonizers themselves.
This study treats following questions
-What were the debates among the French urban policy makers concerning the reorganization of urban space in Morocco?
-What was the effect of their policies on the colonized countries with strong islamic urban tradition in the management of urban spaces and the communities?
-What kind of interpretations did the local inhabitants and the French rulers make from the consequences?
These questions will shed more light on the confusing modernization process of the ex-colonized societies, and will contribute for a better comprehension on the future urban process in their communities.
