This study analyzed changes in species composition and successional characteristics of Larix kaempferi plantations in national parks and examined the effects of stand structure and site conditions on successional sequences in order to propose vegetation type-specific management strategies. Vegetation data from 142 relevés established in L. kaempferi plantations in Jirisan, Woraksan, and Chiaksan National Parks were analyzed using phytosociological tabulation and constancy analyses to classify community types and interpret successional sequences. The results identified seven vegetation types (A-a, A-b, A-c, B, C, D, and E) based on species composition and site characteristics. Type A represented an early successional stage characterized by the strong dominance of L. kaempferi. Type B showed reduced dominance of L. kaempferi, while species belonging to the regional potential natural vegetation (PNV) formed a secondary tree layer, exhibiting structural characteristics similar to those of natural forests. Type C exhibited the highest constancy and dominance of PNV species and was evaluated as the vegetation type most closely resembling natural forests. In contrast, Type D represented a secondary successional stage following logging disturbance, whereas Type E occurred under unique site conditions where normal successional development was delayed. Successional analysis indicated that L. kaempferi plantations generally followed a successional sequence from Type A through Type B to Type C. However, multiple successional trajectories were observed depending on site conditions, plantation density, and management history. Successional development was influenced more strongly by site conditions and stand structure than by plantation age. Based on these findings, management strategies including group thinning, selection cutting, protection of native forest species, soil restoration, and ecological restoration were presented according to vegetation type and successional stage. The results provide baseline information for developing vegetation type-specific management strategies and supporting natural forest restoration and biodiversity conservation in national parks.
