The social changes of Korea in the first half years of the 20th century engages with the disorganization aspect of the Confucian family`s ethics centering around the family circle. Toji. written by Park, Kyungni. with the background of this period, shows from the collapse of the vertical relations to the formation of the horizontal relations, that is, to the modern human relations, beginning by suggesting the problem of `the three basic principles in Confucian human relations(三綱)`. Toji weakens the necessity of the succession by the first son gradually through the motif, `the succession`. Instead, it enlarges the interest in the preservation of the home by the remaining women and the woman successor, that is, the daughter. Also, it reveals that the anachronical loyalty is taken to pieces thoroughly by the factors of the changes such as the absence of the monarch and the formation of the modern view of the nation. In addition, it, shows the concern about the fixation of the ideology of anti-life through the apparatus, `the discussion`. The ideology of chastity is expressed as the emblem of the self-dignity, as the implementation of the responsibility for the existence of the family, and is replaced not by the maintenance of the vertical relations towards the man, but by the ethics of the care of life. Also, it depicts the changes in the ethics for the couple of the day pointing to the equal couple relation which is absolutely based on loves. It raises the obvious problem regarding the fact that the ethics of filial piety in the home is not the behavior by the voluntarily emotion, but is limited to the duty of a child as a vertical order. It is estimated that the contents of the disorganization of the Confucian family`s ethics like this is reflecting the situation of the day relatively well. Park, Kyungni rarely bids farewell to the items of virtue of the traditional pro-family, even though announcing in advance the birth of the modern individual like this. It is because of the concern about the materialism and the violence of the power which are becoming the basis of the formation of the new relations. The idea of `Saengmyung (生命, living things)`- as writer`s own idea - emphasized through the latter half of Toji is the ethical aim of the writer as an alternative found from the Korean tradition.
