The recent studies in education are concerned with the student-centered approach in the learning. In particular, the influence of constructivism has brought about the importance of the learner's self control and ownership in his/her learning into the curriculum. However, the basic understanding of self and self-recognition has been overlooked, while it provides the base of all the learning strategies related to the student-centered approach. Thus, this study aims to understand and explore the meaning of self in education settings. Through there view of literature, the concept of self were explored and the learning variables, related to the positive and the low level of self recognition. Self-regulated learning, learning motivation, and flow were reviewed as the variables predicting to the positive concept of self, while the learned helplessness, the delayed behavior, and the behavior of internet addition were also reviewed as the predictive variables of poor self-recognition. In addition, the importance of self-recognition in online community building was reviewed. Consequently, these findings suggested the necessity of sound understanding of self and its recognition as a learning variable, encouraging the learner's dynamic engagement to his/her learning.
