Although the social relationships between upper leaders and team leaders have been linked to a number of positive team outcomes, research regarding the antecedents of such relationship is limited. Based on similarity and social network perspectives, we theorized and investigated six relevant antecedents to shaping the social relationships between upper leaders and team leaders: age similarity, education level similarity, tenure similarity, intra-team network centrality, leader network centrality, intra-team network density. Data were gathered from four design organizations. Results revealed that education level similarity, tenure similarity, intra-team network centrality, and leader network centrality were positively related to the social relationships between upper leaders and team leaders. The current study advanced extant research on the social relationships between upper leaders and team leaders by examining the various antecedents of such the relationships, based on similarity between upper leaders and team leaders, and social structure which are regarded as important for understanding social relationships, and by explaining the development process of the social relationships between upper leaders and team leaders. Implications, limitations, and directions for future study are discussed.
