베를린 훔볼트 대학 = “근대 대학의 어머니”

국문 초록 (Abstract)

베를린 훔볼트 대학은 가치중립적 연구 및 학문적 자유 등, 근대 과학의 이상과 기준을 설정하고 제도화한 근대적 대학의 기원으로 간주되고 있으며, 그 모델은 오늘날까지 대체로 존중되고 있는 결과 “모든 근대 대학의 어머니”라고 불리고 있다. 지성사적으로는 18세기 후반부로부터 연원하는 낭만주의와 계몽주의를 결합하여 독일 지성의 이상주의적 전통을 확립한 대학이었다. 과학사에서는 근대 물질문명의 이론적 기초를 제공한 다수의 기념비적 업적을 산출한 대학이었다. 그러나 제국주의라는 시대적 배경아래서 국가지상주의를 함양하는 지적 토대 마련에 기여한 대학이라는 평가를 동시에 받기도 한다. 이와 같이 독일사의 특수성에서 기원한 가장 독일적인 대학이면서도, 유럽사의 변곡점에서 긍정적이던 부정적이던 커다란 전환의 지적 토대를 제공했다는 점에서 유럽 역사의 굴곡을 극명하게 반영했던 대학으로서 훔볼트 대학의 역사적 위상을 자리매김할 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Humboldt University at Berlin has been regarded as the origin of modern university that conceptualized and institutionalized the ideals and standards of modern science, including the conceptions of value-free research and academic freedom, As a result, its model for modern university has been by and large respected as “mother of all modern universities.” Seen from the viewpoint of intellectual history, it was the university that established the tradition of German idealism which was in turn based on a synthesis of the Enlightenment and Romanticism that had become prevalent since the end of the 18th century. In the history of natural science, it has produced numerous and monumental achievements by providing fundamental theories and practices to modern scientific world. On the other hand, it is observed that this university contributed to the imperialistic ultra-nationalism of the age in its providing an intellectual rationales for the idealization of the state. Thus this university is characterized as an exemplar that provided the momentums in those turning points in European history, whether positive or negative.
