This purpose of this study is to clarify the ultrastructure and enzymatic characteristics of M cells in the follicle-associated epithelium(FAE) covering Peyer's patches in the Mongolian gerbil ileum.
In the light microsopy, FAE represented typical dome structure covering the Peyer's patch. The brush border of the villous epithelium was continuous and regular in height, but the brush border of FAE was not continuous and don't appeared intermittently.
In the study using alkaline phiosphatase, FAE represented the sites with the negative and positive reactions, in contrast with the epithelium of villous portion that represented the strongly positive reaction.
In the electron mecroscopic findings, FAE was composed of principal absoptive cells, many M cells and a few goblet cells. M cells was characterized by having short, sparse and irregular microvilli at their luminal surface and abundant cytoplasmic vesicles. M cells were distributed both in the upper and lower portions of the dome FAE. A number of M cells enclosed the individual and grouped lymphocytes which are located in FAE. Some lymphocytes were located between in the epithelial layer and in the subepithelial layer through the interrupted basal lamina.
These findings indicated that FAE is Mongolian gerbil in similar to ones of the other mammals in the morphological characteristics.
