은혜의 수단인 기도로서의 시편 찬송에 대한 칼빈의 이해 = Calvin’s Understanding on the Psalmody as a Means of Grace

국문 초록 (Abstract)

칼빈은 기독교강요 초판을 쓸 때부터 찬송을 기도의 한 종류라고 생각하였다. 그는 이러한 생각을 발전시켜 1537년의 제네바 교회의 조직과 예배를 위한 초안에서 공예배에 시편 찬송을 부를 것을 제안하였다. 그는 제네바 개혁에 실패한 후에 스트라스부르그에 정착하자마자 그곳에서 개혁활동을 하던 마틴 부처의 영향을 받으면서 시편찬송가집을 발간하여 프랑스어로 시편 찬송을 불렀다. 이 때 그가 마로의 도움을 받으면서 편집했던 시편 찬송가들은 하나님을 찬양하는 것보다는 탄식과 기원의 찬송들이 주류였다. 그는 이러한 자신의 실천을 반영하여 기독교강요 2판에서는 살전 5장 17절의 쉬지 말고 기도하라는 내용을 공기도에도 적용될 있다고 해석하여 자주 모여 공적 기도를 하는 것으로 이해하였다.
그는 1541년 제네바로 돌아온 직후인 1542년과 1543년에 연이어 예식서를 출판하였다. 그는 이 두 예식서의 서문으로 독자에게 보내는 편지를 썼는데, 이 두 편지에서 자신의 기도로서의 찬송에 대한 견해를 더욱 발전시켰다. 1542년에 그는 그때까지의 견해와 동일하게 기도로서의 찬송이란 견해를 유지하면서, 세속 음악과 교회 음악을 나눈다. 그리고 설교, 기도, 성례를 하나님께서 명령하신 세 가지 은혜의 수단으로 언급하는데, 여기서 찬양을 기도에 포함시킨다. 그는 1543년 판에서는 찬양이 교회 밖에서도 하나님을 묵상하는 수단으로 가정과 들판에서 사용될 수 있다고 말한다. 그는 기도의 수단인 찬양에서 곡조가 더 중요한데, 하나님을 찬양하는 데는 하나님께로부터 받은 것이 가장 적합하기 때문에 다윗의 영감된 시편을 사용해야 하고, 곡조로서는 무게가 있고 장엄해야 하며 부르기에 적절해야 한다고 하였다. 그리고 이러한 곡조로 제네바에서 교회 선법이 주로 사용되어 간결하면서도 가사 전달에 적합한 단음 찬송가가 불려졌다. 이러한 칼빈의 노력들은 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 송영으로서의 찬송의 성격과 함께 은혜의 수단으로서의 기도의 성격이 조화를 이룬 것이라 판단된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Calvin considers the Psalm singing as a kind of prayer from the first edition of the Institutes of Christian Religion. The singing as a prayer is not a private prayer, but the public prayer as the thanksgiving at the worship assembly. His opinion that the Psalm song is a kind of public prayer didn’t change until his death. Therefore we know that Calvin's Psalm songs have both side such as a doxological character and a means of grace. From the doxological side we praise the God’s glory in the presence of the God and angels. And from the side of a means of grace, the Psalm singing are to be like the needles to arouse us to pray and praise God, to mediate on his works, in order to love him, fear, honor and glory him. Calvin argued that we must use the Psalms for the letter of the song because we can‘t sing things worthy of God unless we have received them from him. He used the church mode for melody in order to transmit the meaning of the letter clearly and to have weight and majesty. Accordingly in the consideration of the music theology of Calvin, the contemporary singing’s letter will be written on the God’s words and its melody must avoid the tune to excite the human sense and use the weighty and majestic tune. Today when we praise, we have to understand prayer’s both side of the doxological character and the means of grace.
