서울민속학 연구의 지평확장을 위한 연구대상과 분야

국문 초록 (Abstract)

서울의 민속을 한마디로 표현하기는 매우 어렵다. 왜냐하면 서울은 대한민국의 수도이자 600년 도읍의 역사가 있는 곳이면서 거대 도시여서 전통적인 민속과는 거리가 멀어 보이기 때문이다. 그러나 서울은 서울이라는 지역에서 생산한 수많은 민속이 있어 이를 서울민속이라 할 수 있다. 그래서 이제 서울민속을 전문적으로 연구하는 서울민속학이 필요하다는 것이다. 이글은 서울민속학의 지평확장을 위해 그 연구 분야와 범위를 가늠하려는 것이다.
서울에는 유구한 역사와 함께 생성 변화되어 온 서울 고유의 민속이 현재까지 지속되고 있다. 이와 함께 서울은 대한민국의 가장 번화한 도시여서 산업화와 함께 생성된 도시민속이 존재하는 곳이기도 하다. 서울을 토대로 살아가는 사람들이 만든 다양한 문화공동체가 가지고 있는 공동체민속도 중요하다. 도시에서는 직장생활이 생활의 주기이므로 휴일과 기념일의 민속 역시 서울의 특징적인 민속이기도 하다. 그러므로 서울민속학은 전통민속과 현대민속, 도시민속의 관점에서 다양한 분야를 연구해야 한다.
이제 세종시로 이전하였지만 서울에는 다양한 관공서가 있었고, 지금도 일부가 남아 있어 이들이 만들어낸 민속 역시 서울민속학의 연구대상이 된다. 서울시에서 추진하는 서울학과 서울민속학이 만나야 하는 것도 서울민속학의 중요한 임무이다. 다양한 직업과 집단, 전통에 따른 다양한 민속지 개발 역시 서울민속학의 지평확산을 위해서는 간과할 수 없는 분야다.
서울민속학은 서울이라는 도시의 민속연구를 목적으로 한다. 그러므로 주제별 연구, 공동체별 연구, 지역별 연구 등 다양한 접근이 가능하다. 그러나 더 중요한 것은 이러한 접근이 개별로 진행되기보다는 상호 연계성을 가져야 서울민속학의 연구대상과 분야가 분명해질 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

It is difficult to define the Seoul folkloristics, since “Seoul” with its 600-history as a capital city and a modern mega-city, seems to be a subject which is a bit far from the folkloristic studies. Given that Seoul has been producing numerous folkloristic practices, to study the practices could be called “Seoul folkloristics.” Thus, it is necessary to begin the Seoul folkloristics as a research field. This paper suggests some possible research scope and fields for broadening the scope of Seoul folkloristics.
Seoul has been making and transmitting its own folk customs and practices in its long period of history. Along with this point, as one of the nation’s busiest and abundant cities Seoul has its own elements of the urban folklife which has formed in the process of industrialization. Different and various folk-groups based in Seoul also play key roles in developing communal folklife. Holiday folklife (mainly in holidays and memorial days) could be part of Seoul’s folklife as cities usually work on a cycle of the office-life. Accordingly Seoul folkloristics should deal with various fields such as traditional and contemporary folkloristic aspects as well as urban one, from very urban folkloristic points of view.
Although part of governmental system has moved to Sejong city, Seoul has its unique folklife as an administrative city since Seoul used to have a number of public offices and still some of them existed. Also there are some missions to carry out: Seoul folkloristics should meet the ‘Seoul studies’ as well as to develop various ethnographical accounts from various jobs, communities and tradition which is inevitable for the Seoul folkloristics.
Seoul folkloristics aims to study folklife of the city of Seoul. In other words it could make various research approaches by subjects, communities and locals. More significant thing is, however, that these approaches should carried out on the basis of inter-relatedness and this finally make the study subjects and scope as a feasible study field.
