다원문화의 경험이 미주교포청소년의 자아정체감 형성에 주는 영향에 관한 연구 = Impact of Multicultural Experiences on Identity Formation among Korean American Adolescents

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미국에 거주하고 있는 교포 수와 교포 청소년이 증가추세에 있지만 이들을 대상으로 한 자아정체감 및 민족정체감에 관한 연구는 전무한 형편이다. 본 연구는 다원문화를 경험하고 있는 교포청소년들의 자아정체감 및 민족정체감에 관한 이론적 고찰을 통해 다원문화의 경험이 자아정체감 발달에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 본 연구에서는 교포청소년의 자아정체감 및 민족정체감과 관련된 연구에는 어떤 것이 있으며, 교포청소년의 자아정체감 및 민족정체감의 형성을 이해하는데 도움을 줄 수 있는 이론적 틀은 어떤 것이 있는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 에릭슨의 자아정체감 및 자아정체감혼란에 관한 이론적 논의를 기반으로, 자아정체감의 네 단계, 그리고 자아정체감에 대한 비판을 먼저 살펴본 후에, 민족정체감의 개념적 논의와 이에 영향을 미치는 다양한 요인을 살펴 보았다. 나아가 본 연구에서는 아시아인 및 한인교포의 민족정체성에 대한 연구를 토대로 교포청소년의 자아정체감 및 민족정체감에 관련된 이론을 논의하였다. 마지막으로 본 연구에서는 자아정체감 및 민족정체감이 사회복지 실천 및 조사연구, 그리고 정책에 미치는 함의를 논의하였다.

Despite the increase in numbers of Korean American adolescents, little is known on identity formation and ethnic identity. This study aims to explore various theories on identity and ethnic identity, focusing on Korean American adolescents. This study relies on Erikson`s identity formation as a basis for discussion and then taps on concepts and four stages of identity development as suggested by Marcia. This study further explores several criticism from various theoretical perspectives. A related topic to identity is ethnic identity, which Korean American adolescents need to incorporate to identity as they simultaneously experience multiple cultures. Furthermore, this study explores various factors affecting identity and ethnic identity development among Asian and Korean American adolescents and then discusses implications for social work practice, research, and policies.
