라파엘전파주의와 문화변동

국문 초록 (Abstract)

연구가 2년 계획에서 1년 계획으로 축소되면서 기존의 계획을 모두 진행시키는 데 한계를 느끼게 되었고, 이에 따라 각 연구 영역에서 연구계획을 축소하거나 다소 수정하는 변화가 있었다. 미술사 분야에서는 애초의 주제가 변경되어 “러스킨과 미국 라파엘전파”라는 주제로 연구가 진행 중이고, 영국문학 분야에서는 연구가 완료되어 「시각예술에 대한 이끌림과 거리두기: 『성 애그니스제 전야』와 라파엘전파 회화」라는 학술논문이 출판되었고, 미국문학 분야에서는 “예술가로서 살아남기: 나사니엘 호손의 『대리석 목양신』과 헨리 제임스의 『여인의 초상』를 중심으로”라는 주제로 연구가 진행 중이며, 미학 분야에서는 “라파엘전파주의와 대중문화”와 “라파엘전파주의와 판타지 영화”라는 두 가지 방향의 연구가 진행 중이다.

미술사
연구계획을 축소하고, 타 연구영역의 연구자와 토론하는 과정에서 영국 라파엘전파와 미국미술계를 엮는 연결고리인 존 러스킨의 존재가 갖는 의미에 주목하게 되었다. 이러한 논의의 결과, ‘라파엘전파주의와 후원’이라는 애초의 주제를 미국 미술에 접목시킬 수 있는 「러스킨과 미국 라파엘전파」라는 주제로 변경하게 되었다.
신생 미술잡지인 『크레용 Crayon』은 러스킨을 새로운 미학의 복음을 전파하는 예언자의 경지로 추켜세울 정도로 러스킨이 미국 미술과 공예운동에 미친 영향은 영국미술의 그 어떤 측면보다 컸다. 미국 잡지에 러스킨에 대한 미국의 태도와 사고가 어떻게 드러나는지를 구체적 에세이와 평문을 통해 추적하고 있다.
미국에서 출판된 러스킨의 저서나 신생 잡지 외에 1863년 1월 27일 토마스 찰스 파러(Thomas Charles Farrer)의 작업실에서 8명의 구성원이 모여 미국 미술과 건축의 개혁을 주창한 결성한 미술에 있어서 진리의 향상을 위한 협회(Association for the Advancement of Truth in Art)라는 단체도 러스킨과 미국 라파엘전파주의를 엮는 중요한 연결고리이다. 특히 이 협회에 소속된 존 헨리 힐(John Henry Hill), 존 윌리엄 힐(John William Hill), 찰스 허버트 무어(Charles Herbert Moore), 헨리 뉴먼(Henry R. Newman), 윌리엄 리처즈(William T. Richards) 등과 같은 미술가들은 1848년 영국 라파엘전파 형제회를 회화의 관습에 대한 저항의 모델로 수용하고 밀레이와 헌트와 같은 영국 작가의 작품의 특징을 반영한 작품 활동을 하였다. 이 단체의 활동과 소속 미술가들의 작품 분석을 통해 미국 라파엘전파의 구체적 양상을 살피고 있다.

Due to the reduction of the research period, 4 researchers were forced to change the scope of their researches. In the field of art history, the study on the theme of “Ruskin and the American Pre-Raphaelites” is in progress; in American literature, “Surviving as an Artist in a Mass-Society in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Marble Faun and Henry James' A Portrait of a Lady”; in aesthetics, “the Impact of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement on popular culture in 20th and 21st century”; finally in the field of English literature, the study on “Attraction to and Distancing of Visual Arts: The Eve of St. Agnes and Pre-Raphaelite Paintings” was done and published in an academic journal.

Art History
In the process of reducing the scope of the research, there has been a change in topics, from “Pre-Raphaelitism and patronage” to “Ruskin and the American Pre-Raphaelites.” Eventually this research is to examine the influence of Ruskin on American art and thought, and consider the characteristics of the American Pre-Raphaelites. Ruskin's writings enjoyed incredible popolarity and fame in America. Ruskin's blend of art, morality, and nature appealed to audiences in the United States. For example, William Stillman, an ardent fan of Ruskin, wrote in 1860 that for him and perhaps for other prominent 19th-ce
