‘정치신학’에 대한 비판적 대응으로서의 “새로운 정치신학” 재고(再考) = The Necessity of Advancing “New Political Theology” in Critically Engaging with the ‘Political Theology’

국문 초록 (Abstract)

나치즘 가담 전력과 보수적 정치철학으로 유명한 독일의 공법학자 칼 슈미트(Carl Schmitt, 1888-1985)에게 홉스의 『리바이어던』은 ‘정치신학’ 관점을 형성하는 데 핵심적인 역할을 했다. 이는 이후 세대인 역사학자 라인하르트 코젤렉(Reinhart Koselleck, 1923-2006)과 신학자 위르겐 몰트만(Jürgen Moltmann, 1926-2024)이 홉스의 『리바이어던』에 대한 분석을 통해 근대성의 문제를 탐구하는 데 영향을 끼쳤다. 코젤렉과 몰트만은 나치즘과 제2차 세계 대전 참전 경험이 있는 동시대인이었으나 홉스 해석과 슈미트 ‘정치신학’ 사유에 대해서는 명확한 차이를 보였다. 코젤렉은 슈미트적 관점을 역사적 맥락에서 수용하며 계몽주의의 위선과 근대성의 위기를 분석했다. 몰트만은 슈미트적 관점과 비판적으로 대결하며 민주주의의 발전, 정의와 평화를 위해 신학의 공적 책임을 강조하는 “새로운 정치신학”의 필요성을 제시했다. 본고는 먼저 슈미트의 홉스 해석의 핵심을 요약한 후 코젤렉의 홉스 분석을 살펴본다. 이후 몰트만의 슈미트적 홉스 해석에 대한 비판적 접근을 비교·분석하면서 신학적 맥락화의 의의를 고찰한다. 결론에서는 서구 ‘정치신학’과 신학적 “새로운 정치신학” 사이의 긴장 관계 및 다학제적 협력을 위한 신학의 과제를 논의한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The German jurist, Carl Schmitt (1888-1985), known for his involvement with Nazism and his political conservatism, found Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan to be central to the formation of his ‘political theology’. His influential interpre tation stimulated subsequent generations, e.g. the historian Reinhart Koselleck (1923-2006) and the theologian Jürgen Moltmann (1926-2024), who explored the challenges of modernity through their analyses of Leviathan. Although Koselleck and Moltmann were contemporaries who both experienced Nazism and witnessed the devastation of the World War II, their interpretations of Hobbes’ thought and their responses to Schmitt’s ‘political theology’ reveal significant differences. Koselleck adopted Schmitt’s perspective within a historical framework, using it to critique the hypocrisy of the Enlightenment and to analyze the crises of modernity. In contrast, Moltmann posed a critical challenge to Schmitt’s ‘political theology’, emphasizing the necessity of a “new political theology” that underscores theology’s public responsibility to promote democracy and just peace. This paper begins by summarizing Schmitt’s interpretation of Hobbes and its core arguments, followed by Koselleck’s historical analysis on Hobbes. It then offers a comparative analysis of Moltmann’s critical approach to Schmitt’s reading of Hobbes, highlighting the significance of theological contextualization. In conclusion, this paper discusses the tension between ‘political theology’ and the “new political theology,” as well as the Korean theological tasks required for interdisciplinary cooperation.
