The main thesis of this article is to use the records of Shang Dynasty oracle bones inscriptions, and to confirm each other with the records of traditional documents and archaeological reports, to discuss the content and characteristics of agricultural production technology in the Shang Dynasty.
In ancient times, when productivity was very low, its own ability was extremely weak, and when it was unable to resist the hazards of nature, and could not guarantee the harvest and harvest of labor, it relied on the various shamanistic activities of shamans to achieve control of nature or change the status quo of suffering.
Because of the many divination activities related to agricultural production technology seen in the oracle bones inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty, it originally belonged to one of the categories of shamanistic activities, but on the other hand, it vividly described the true face of the agricultural production technology of the Shang Dynasty.
This article is mainly based on the records of the oracle bones inscriptions in the Shang Dynasty, according to the basic sequence of agricultural production work in a year, to discuss the progress of agricultural production technology in the Shang Dynasty and its characteristics.
First of all, from the record in the Shijing Liangsi, as well as the relics unearthed in the Taixi Shang Tomb in Gaocheng, the Dayangzhou Shang Tomb in Xingan, and the Fuhao Tomb in Yinxu, Shang Dynasty people have begun to use copper farm tools in agricultural production activities.
In addition, in terms of the advances in agricultural production technology in the Shang Dynasty, Shang Dynasty already had improved some agricultural production technology, such as reclamation of wasteland, evaluating the quality of the field, plowing of the field and the way of ‘cow farming’ may have appeared in the Shang Dynasty, fertilization on the field, irrigation and water diversion, grain seeding and farming customs that the king of Shang personally participated in, grain harvest and storage, etc.
From this, we can know that the Shang Dynasty has formed a relatively complete set of production technology of intensive farming, which basically laid the framework of farming technology in later generations. It played a great role in promoting the social production of the Shang Dynasty, and on this basis, the splendid Shang civilization was born.
