Background and objectives: This study was designed to identify the correlations between self-esteem, spiritual wellbeing, depression, and quality of life in nurses caring of cancer patients. Materials and Methods: The data were collected from 138 nurses who took care of cancer patients in cancer centers of a university hospital in Hwasun and 2 university hospitals in Gwangju, from September 20 to October 15, 2004. Previously-reported tools were used to measure self-esteem, spiritual wellbeing, depression and quality of life. Results: Self-esteem and spiritual wellbeing were positively correlated with quality of life, and depression was negatively correlated with quality of life. Conclusion and Suggestion: Our results indicate that the enhancement of self-esteem and spiritual wellbeing and the improvement of quality of life by relieving depression are important to help nurses caring of cancer patients provide cancer patients with better care. Accordingly, the development of programs to enhance self-esteem and spiritual wellbeing and of supportive programs to reduce depression in nurses caring of cancer patients is required.
