This thesis is an attempt to classify foreign plays translated into Korean, which was collected by each year for ten years from 1940 to 1950. It is indeed an inspiring and helpful undertaking to us for the study that as many as 228 marks were translated into Korean from 1920 to 1939 when the ability of foreign languages were considered as not proficiency to Koreans.
It is even impossible for us to believe in the fact that so many plays were translated into Korean.
Particularly it gave me much surprise to find a lot of Russian plays translated and it also gave me much delight to some English, Chinese, French, German plays translated.
All the translated marks of those days could be arranged by the years, by the sources, by the performances, and by the nations.
But a great part of the translated plays were translated into Korean not directly but indirectly, that is, they were translated out of Japanese. Therefore, due to the retranslation, when we compare original warks with translated plays, we can find much false translations. And there are much more false translations because translated works which were translated into Japanese were directly retranslated into Korean.
We can realize that there is few translated plays in the period of 1940, on account of the oppression of Japanese against the Korean language. All the translated plays amount to 18 works from 1940 to 1950. Only seevng this 18 works translated, we can assume that how the oppression of Japanese was severe.
Although only a few works was intorduced, due to the oppression of Japan, the quality of the plays was much higher than the ones in the period of 1920.
It estabilished the development of translation for them to translate the books close to the original.
In this paper, great attention was paid to collect various kinds of materials and to classify them by the nations, years, sources, performances, and much examples of retranslations were given for references.
In conclusion, the writer takes great pride in verifying as many materials as possible and in classifying all the foreign plays translated for twenty years in the past.
