A reader’s self-generated question is not given attention on the reader’s reading after processing of the text, because researchers have studied mainly on the effect of the comprehension of the text. The aim of this study is to explore the educational potential of the reader’s self generated question above processing of the text. If the reader can’t find out the answers of the self-generated questions in the text after reading the text, there remain some lingering questions. When the reader with lingering questions reads subsequently, I want to find out that lingering questions are related to the text selection and discourse synthesis. The result of this study is, first, that it was confirmed that lingering questions affect the text selection. The rate of cases to select secondary text in relation to lingering questions from the total 58 cases was 58.6%, in limited cases that the secondary text contains the answers to lingering questions, it was at 87.1% to select the secondary text in relation to lingering questions. Second, it was found for lingering questions to affect the subject and contents of discourse synthesis. Subjects in this study who had selected to read the secondary text in relation to lingering question decided on the subject(theme) of discourse synthesis similarly for lingering questions. In addition, the proportion of secondary text in discourse synthesis is higher than the primary text.
