The discourse on ‘New Woman’ arose globally with the influx of modernity in 1920s. In case of Korea, the coming of modernity happened under the colonial rule. Drastic severance from the past amplified the longing for modernity and the pursuit of ‘newness’ emerged as the supreme task in Korean society at large. After experiencing the wholesale resistant movement, the colonial authority put up a banner of cultural enlightenment while the colonized intellectuals demanded adoption of modern culture as a means of overcoming the miserable reality at the time. It resulted in ambivalent experience and feelings regarding colonialism and modernity, which became common phenomena in the course of the spread of popular culture in 1930s.
In this research I have analyzed and compared how the ‘New Woman’ was represented in Korean, Chinese and Japanese films of 1930s: Korean films such as <Sweet Dream>(1936), <Military Train>(1937), Chinese films such as <New Woman>(1934) <Crossroads>(1937), and Japanese films such as <Dragnet Girl>(1933), <What Did the Lady Forget?>(1937). The New Woman represented in the films is meaningful as the articulation of modernity, nation, gender and spectatorship of each country at the time.
The film industries in Korea, China and Japan have experienced similar proce
