It was the atomic bomb dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki that forced Japan to admit its defeat and end the World War II. The nuclear attack not only ended the World War II but also left a severe shock and scars in the minds of Japanese people.
As the war persisted, the Japanese public, the intellects in particular, felt the resistance and anger toward the military and the government that waged the war and left its people in the pain of war. Everyone was eager to see the war end. When Hiroshima was hit by a nuclear bomb on August 6, 1945, it was just reported that a new type of weapon was used in that attack, due to the military's embargo on the news, but it was gradually known to the public that the country was hit by a nuclear bomb and suffered serious consequences.
Those who have seen and experienced the devastation in the aftermath of the nuclear attacks left records of their experience in the forms of diary and journals, and Japanese writers built on the records to write novels. The novels released in the initial stages included 'Street of Dead Bodies' by Ota Yoko and 'Summer Flowers' by Hara Tamiki. Writers who had the first-hand experience of nuclear attacks in Hiroshima described the devastating experience in their novels based on their own personal record. These novels focused on damages done by these attacks and the collapse of human nature and human dignity. 'Black Rain' by Ibuse Masuzi, which describes what happens 20 years later after the nuclear attack, shows how the attack inflicted upon the people in their daily lives and marriage.
The literature of nuclear attack is unique literature genre that exists only in Japan as it is the only country that has such unique experience. This genre of literature generally describes the devastation in the aftermath of the attack. However, the nuclear literature also changed Japan's attitude toward the war. In other words, it focused more on their sense of victimization as their nation was hit by America's nuclear attacks, instead of opposing a war or blaming the Japanese military that waged the war in the first place. As a result, the general public of Japan began to see themselves as a victim of the war, and Japan argued for a ban on nuclear attack in the name of peace.
