This study explores the potential of pop-up book techniques for expressing spatiality and depth in 2D image-based animation within a virtual reality (VR) environment. Previous VR content and related studies have attempted to spatialize 2D images through 360-degree spatial expansion, Quill-based drawing, NPR rendering, and layered arrangements. However, relatively little attention has been paid to spatial direction that utilizes the structural properties of 2D images themselves, such as flatness, folding, overlapping, and upright positioning. This study therefore proposes pop-up book direction as an alternative approach that preserves the aesthetic qualities of 2D images while generating a sense of space and depth. The study first reviewed VR cases using 2D images and the structural characteristics of pop-up books to derive key directing elements. Based on these findings, 2D image sources created in Photoshop were arranged in a Blender-based 3D space to produce a pop-up book prototype. The prototype was then analyzed according to four criteria: front-facing spatial composition, interaction, paper-folding structure, and layered spatial arrangement.
The results show that layered spatial arrangement contributes to spatiality by distinguishing foreground, midground, and background, while paper-folding structures enable flat images to be perceived as three-dimensional forms. Interaction elements such as flaps, pull-tabs, and rotational mechanisms also support participatory experience by inducing visual changes through user manipulation. These findings suggest that immersion in VR content does not necessarily rely on 360-degree spatial expansion, but can be achieved through structural depth and interaction within a limited front-facing frame. This study presents pop-up book direction as an alternative model for VR content that preserves the aesthetic qualities of 2D animation while offering new spatial experiences.
