The purpose of this study is learning the awareness of Japanese people on the Asia Pacific War during the wartime and the direction of responsibility awareness by paying attention to the war responsibility presented in the occupation period Japanese literature immediately after the defeat of war. This study went on by following two major directions. First is the responsibility on the concrete war crimes committed by the soldiers, the low-ranking war performers, when they physically moved to the countries they invaded. Second is the responsibility of the government-patronized writers who cooperated in the mobilization of Japanese people to the battlefields by encouraging the war using ‘a pen’ instead of ‘a rifle’ though they did not actually commit a war crime in judicial sense.
This study analyzed how the political responsibility and the assailant awareness of Japanese people, who were the citizens of a country which provoked a war, are presented or omitted in the Japanese literature. Next, the accountability of the ‘grassroots militarism’, in which the Japanese people implicitly participated in militarism and fascism at the front and rear, was contemplated. Then the self-presentation and accountability of the Japanese literary people who cooperated to war as the persons in char
