In order to synthesize 3-hydroxy-5-methyl-isoxazole, a potent fungicide, we attempt to obtain α,β-dibromobutyramide. Acid hydrolyis of crotonitrile followed by bromination was tried to obtaine α, β-dibromobutyramide in vain.
However, the reverse order, namely, bromination followed by acid hydrolysis gives the desired produit in good yield (94%).
The compound was identifified by ir, uv, elemental analysis and the derivative synthesis.
