베트남전의 억압된 기억과 타자, 그리고 공포 영화: 공수창의〈알포인트〉연구 = Return of ``The Repressed`` and ``the Other`` in the Vietnam War Horror Film: A Study on Kong Su-Chang`s R Point

This paper examines R point (2004), one of the Vietnam War films made in Korea, directed by Kong Su-chang. While previous Korean films that dealt with the Vietnam War experiences of Koreans mostly viewed the war from the perspective of anti-Communism or merely employed the motif of war to stage some romantic melodramas, R point seriously deals with Korean soldiers` conscience and repentance. Borrowing from the notion of Robin Wood, who argues that horror films effectively portray the repressed social minorities or outsiders in the sense the emergence of the repressed threaten the existing social order when they appear in the form of monsters in horror films, this paper claims that the ghosts haunting the Korean soldiers in Vietnam should be viewed as the revelation of the repressed. In this film, the repressed appear in multiple forms: the indigenous Vietnamese killed innocent in the course of the war, the female Vietnamese sniper attempting revenge on the enemy soldiers, and some dead Korean soldiers whose vengeful ghosts linger in Vietnam. Their return in this horror film reminds the spectators of the forgotten history of colonialism in Vietnam.
