In general, the design and development of metallic structural materials are aimed at achieving high strength and high ductility. The development of structural materials with such properties is a critical issue not only for the application of materials in new high-value-added industries but also for extending the lifespan of materials. Meanwhile, with global environmental concerns, such as regulations on greenhouse gas emissions, coming to the forefront, the necessity of research on not only the development of advanced metallic structural materials but also their recyclability has been increasingly emphasized.
Therefore, this study aimed to develop a resettable alloy that can restore its microstructure and mechanical properties to their pre-use state through a specialized resetting process. Research on alloys capable of resetting their microstructure and properties is in its emerging stage globally, and previous studies in the field have primarily been conducted as case studies.
This study systematically investigates and proposes microstructural design strategies, alloy composition, and process design methods for the development of resettable alloys. Specifically, the research employs segregation engineering as a core methodology. Segregation refers to the phenomenon where solute atoms spontaneously concentrate at defect sites to reduce interfacial energy. While segregation typically occurs during solidification and has been regarded as a factor causing material heterogeneity and adverse effects on microstructure and properties, recent studies have demonstrated that precise control of this phenomenon can be used to achieve targeted properties, a concept termed segregation engineering. In this study, segregation engineering is utilized to induce localized phase transformations to austenite at interfaces. This is followed by repeated utilization of stress-induced martensitic transformation and reverse transformation as the resetting mechanism.
To achieve this, the widely used 9Cr steel, known for its excellent mechanical properties, was selected as the model system. Alloying elements for segregation engineering were identified based on their segregation tendencies and their effects on phase stability during grain boundary segregation. Among these, Mn was selected as the primary alloying element.
Subsequently, the effects of Mn content on the initial microstructure and the microstructure after the reversion process were analyzed. Through thermodynamic simulations, a compositional range for candidate resettable alloys was proposed. Additionally, for the proposed alloy compositions, reversion processes were performed, and the resulting austenite phase's composition, stability, and phase fraction were comprehensively analyzed and simulated. Based on these findings, the applicable temperature range for the reversion process was also proposed. Then, alloys within the proposed compositional range were fabricated, and mechanical property analyses were conducted to identify the optimal alloy composition. For the selected composition, the reversion process parameters, including temperature and duration, were experimentally optimized.
The microstructural and mechanical property resetting behavior of the optimized resettable alloy was then analyzed. Specifically, under uniaxial tensile testing conditions, the microstructural and mechanical changes were examined as the resetting process was repeatedly performed after the material reached a certain strain. To achieve precise analysis between deformation and resetting processes, in-situ neutron diffraction was conducted during deformation and heat treatment. The results confirmed that stress-induced martensitic transformation occurred during deformation, and reverse martensitic transformation occurred during the resetting process. In summary, the study experimentally demonstrated that metastable austenite phases can recover their fraction after use through the resetting process, verifying the feasibility of property resetting in the developed resettable alloy.
Furthermore, the duration of the resetting process required to reset the fraction of austenite was optimized based on the strain level, which reflects the accumulated damage in the material. This optimization was achieved by integrating the results from the aforementioned in-situ neutron diffraction analysis during deformation and heat treatment with kinetic simulations using the DICTRA module of the Thermo-Calc software. Consequently, a functional relationship between the degree of deformation and the required resetting process time was proposed.
However, a limitation was observed in the resetting of mechanical properties. While the resetting process significantly improved elongation, contributing to the material's potential for extended service life, other properties, such as yield strength and work-hardening behavior, exhibited differences before and after the resetting process. This discrepancy is attributed to the inability of low-temperature heat treatment alone to fully reverse microstructural changes induced by deformation, such as grain rotation and texture evolution.
To overcome these inherent limitations of a single-step resetting process and to improve the time efficiency and performance of the recovery process, this study designed and proposed a two-step resetting process. This approach combines high-temperature rapid heat treatment with subsequent low-temperature annealing, aiming to enhance both the effectiveness and practicality of property resetting in resettable alloys.
In this study, a two-step resetting process was proposed through a detailed prediction of the microstructural evolution mechanisms occurring during high-temperature rapid heat treatment and subsequent low-temperature annealing. Specifically, the high-temperature rapid heat treatment aims to annihilate defects induced by deformation while maintaining the Mn concentration gradient formed during the reversion process. Following this, the low-temperature annealing focuses on restoring the Mn distribution changed during the high-temperature step, thereby resetting the fraction of the austenite phase.
This combined approach demonstrates that high-performance and highly efficient resetting can be achieved through the synergistic application of these two processes. The proposed mechanisms were experimentally validated by repeatedly performing uniaxial tensile tests and resetting processes. The microstructural changes at each stage of heat treatment were consistent with the designed mechanisms, and the mechanical properties were found to recover to excellent levels, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed two-step resetting process.
In summary, this study systematically and comprehensively proposed a methodology for designing a new paradigm of alloys capable of property resetting. To achieve this, segregation engineering was employed to select alloy compositions, and optimized process parameters for reversion and resetting processes were proposed. Through the analysis of microstructural and mechanical property changes during uniaxial tensile deformation and resetting processes, it was confirmed that single-temperature heat treatment for property recovery has inherent limitations. Based on a comprehensive consideration of phase transformation phenomena and solute diffusion, a high-performance, high-efficiency two-step resetting process was newly designed and proposed. The proposed resetting process demonstrated significantly improved time efficiency and superior performance compared to conventional resetting processes.
The findings of this study encompass a wide range of topics, including the design and optimization of manufacturing processes for resettable alloys and the development and optimization of resetting processes. These results are expected to serve as an essential guideline in the field of property-recoverable alloys.
