In contemporary society, sleep is no longer regarded merely as a basic physiological rest. Rather, it is increasingly recognized as a fundamental process essential to physical recovery, emotional stability, stress regulation, and the maintenance of cognitive functioning, thereby constituting a core determinant of individual quality of life and overall well-being. However, accelerated industrialization and informatization have led to increasingly irregular daily rhythms, while excessive workloads and the pervasive use of digital media have contributed to chronic sleep deprivation and declining sleep quality. Against this backdrop, the demand for “sleep well-being” has expanded beyond the individual level to encompass the broader domains of public health, social welfare, and the tourism industry.
At the same time, the purpose of tourism itself has undergone a notable transformation. Whereas tourism was traditionally centered on mobility, consumption, and sightseeing, recent trends indicate a gradual shift toward wellness-oriented tourism that emphasizes rest, recovery, and self-care. As accommodation experiences have come to be perceived as a core component of travel, tourist accommodations are no longer viewed merely as spaces for overnight stays but are increasingly recognized as key tourism infrastructure supporting physical and psychological restoration. In this context, tourists' perceptions of travel experiences have expanded to include adequate rest and high-quality sleep as essential experiential components.
Along with the expansion of wellness tourism, growing attention has been directed toward the restorative function of sleep within tourism experiences, giving rise to tourism discourses that position sleep as a core value-often referred to as “sleep tourism” Within this discourse, sleep is understood not as a simple convenience service but as a multidimensional experience integrating physical relaxation, emotional recovery, environmental comfort, and overall well-being. Accordingly, sleep-friendly tourist accommodations are required to go beyond the provision of premium bedding or soundproofing facilities to encompass sleep-oriented spatial design, service programs that support psychological relaxation, and operational management systems that facilitate high-quality sleep experiences. Nevertheless, existing domestic and international accommodation evaluation and certification systems continue to focus primarily on facility standards and general service satisfaction, lacking well-established criteria that assess sleep quality as a core performance outcome. As a result, the concept of "sleep-friendly accommodation" has often been employed as a marketing term without clear or standardized evaluation benchmarks.
In response, this study aims to conceptualize sleep-friendly tourist accommodation as a distinct research category and to develop a certification evaluation framework grounded in scientific evidence and practical applicability. The study is based on an integrative theoretical framework that combines physiological and psychological theories of sleep stability and recovery, the concept of restorative environments in environmental psychology, discussions of choice architecture in behavioral economics, and Eastern philosophical perspectives emphasizing harmony and balance. Through this approach, sleep-friendly environments are conceptualized not as mere assemblages of technical features but as experiential conditions emerging from the harmonious interaction between individuals, spaces, and their surrounding environments.
Methodologically, this study adopts a mixed research design that integrates literature analysis with expert consensus. Based on a comprehensive review of prior studies, six core evaluation categories for sleep-friendly tourist accommodations were identified: environmental comfort, sleep space design, service operation protocols, wellness and psychological support, health, safety, and hygiene management, and governance, measurement, and sustainability. Subsequently, a three-round Delphi survey was conducted with 23 experts from the fields of sleep science, tourism, hospitality, and wellness, resulting in a refined evaluation framework consisting of six categories, 16 upper-level concepts, 34 sub-level concepts, and 64 specific indicators.
Furthermore, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was applied to determine the relative importance of the evaluation categories. The results indicate that health, safety, and hygiene management, as well as environmental comfort, received the highest weights, confirming their role as fundamental preconditions for sleep-friendly tourist accommodations. Sensitivity analysis further demonstrated that the structural consistency of the evaluation results remained stable within a ±10% range of weight variation, thereby confirming the robustness and reliability of the proposed certification framework.
The academic contributions of this study are threefold. First, by systematically organizing evaluation criteria centered on sleep-friendly tourist accommodations, this research extends the conceptual scope of wellness tourism and sleep-related tourism studies. Second, by presenting an integrated certification evaluation framework that encompasses accommodation design, operation, management, and assessment, the study enhances the applicability of academic research to policy formulation and industry practice. Third, the derived indicator system provides a policy-relevant foundation for the future introduction of sleep-friendly accommodation certification schemes and the development of wellness tourism policies.
Moreover, this study holds practical and social significance in that it demonstrates the institutional potential of sleep-friendly tourist accommodations at the intersection of wellness tourism and sustainable tourism. It suggests that tourism mediated through sleep can contribute not only to individual health recovery but also to the revitalization of regional wellness industries and the development of sustainable tourism ecosystems. By proposing a certification evaluation framework that reflects the multidimensional value of sleep-friendly tourist accommodations through both quantitative and qualitative approaches, this study establishes a theoretical and policy-oriented foundation for positioning sleep-related tourism not as a transient wellness trend but as a long-term pillar of tourism policy and industry strategy.
