This study aims to quantitatively and empirically analyze the economic inducement effects of the education service sector on regional economies by province. Education is a key foundation for human capital formation and regional economic revitalization. Given structural demographic issues such as low birth rates, aging population, and concentration in the capital area, analyzing the economic contribution of education at the regional level is crucial. For this purpose, the study utilized the 2015 Regional Input-Output Tables from the Bank of Korea.
The analysis revealed distinct structural differences in the education service sector across provinces. Seoul and Gyunggi dominated most economic indicators, functioning as the industry's core, while some non-capital metropolitan areas such as Busan, Gyungnam, Gyungbuk, and Incheon maintained a certain scale and regional linkages. The education service sector, being labor-intensive, significantly influenced regional employment.
Induced effect analysis showed high production inducement effects in Ulsan, Sejong, and Gwangju; high value-added inducement effects in Jeonnam, Gangwon, and Gyungnam; and notable employment inducement effects in Daegu, Jeonbuk, and Gyungbuk. The strong inducement effects in some non-capital regions suggest that the education service sector could serve as a new growth engine for balanced regional development.
These results demonstrate that the education service sector is closely connected to key industries within regional economies and exerts substantial influence through inter-industry linkages and wide-area inducement effects. By quantitatively proving the economic contribution of education, this study provides empirical grounds for future policies focused on regional economic revitalization and balanced development strategies centered on education.
