This writing examines the outcome and meaning of Dr. Ji Chun-sang’s folklore of Namdo, according to which it refers to the academic role and problem by scholars in the future. Ji Chun-sang has investigated Namdo folklore during the past fifty years, through which he laid the academic basis of as well as extending a wide range of knowledge of it, and also provided a direction in which indeed, a study of Namdo folklore should advance. In the rapidly changing modern society and in the age of our tradition easily faded, a study which he excavated the people who kept the archetypal value of folk culture and assigned a special meaning to it provided an opportunity for us to be aware of its potential and possibility, and it, hence, involved producing a good result of developing Namdo folklore these days. Ji Chun-sang stated that the ultimate purpose of surveying Namdo folklore was to authenticate ‘the identity and excellence of it’. Then, not only did he put the emphasis on the importance of a field investigation, but he maintained the possibility of researching folk culture as an original form of the rapidly changing modern culture, as well as academic, public knowledge and signification of traditional culture. It should, thus, point to the fact that his practical study of the identity and excellence in Namdo folklore will be an assignment to be settled by junior scholars because the task cannot be finished in his days.
