The Gospel of John is. the Gospel of encounter. It means that it is only possible through Jesus the logos for a human being to encounter with God.
This story of encounter consists of three parts, the cosmic prologue(l : 1-18), the body(1 : 19-20: 31), and the cosmic epilogue (Chap. 21).
First, the cosmic prologue says that the only way of encounter of a human with God is Jesus the logos, for he himself is God the only son who is able to connect a human being with God.
The body shows some various forms of encounter, which we could classified in three types. The first type is named "the antipathetic encounter". This stands a symbol for the encounter of Jews with Jesus. The second is "the sympathetic encounter', that signifies the encounter of Jesus with the crowd around him at that time.
The third type of encounter we could call "the empathetic encounter", that implies the Jesus' encounter with his disciples. This third case should be the ideal encounter, which includes two forms. One form of them is the encounter Jesus with the named disciples who are symbolized by Peter in the Gospel. This could be called "the first stage or the elementary stage" of encounter. But the other form of encounter that the Gospel of John pursues ultimately to get, seems to be "the evolutionary stage" of encounter, in that Jesus had met the unnamed disciples, who are represented by the disciple whom He loved. While the former is the encounter, through which the disciples find it out 'who Jesus is'- that is, Christ, the Son of God, the latter is the encounter that enlightens 'what Jesus is', Jesus as Light, Life, Resurrection and Truth of the world. So the essential encounter with Christ is the latter one.
Lastly, the cosmic epilogue shows the succession of Jesus' work after His Resurrection which is being fulfilled by Peter and His beloved disciple to the end of the world.
