장소정체성 개념을 통한 지역 문학의 서사화 연구―성북근현대문학관과 성북 문학을 중심으로― = A Study on the Narrativization of Regional Literature through the Concept of Place Identity: Focusing on the Seongbuk Modern and Contemporary Literature Museum and Seongbuk Literature

국문 초록 (Abstract)

그동안 지역 문학 연구에서는 작가의 출생지, 성장지 여부 등 지역 소속성이 가장 중요한 판정 기준으로 작용해 왔다. 그러나 이러한 생물학적, 지리적 귀속성을 중심으로 하는 접근은 문학작품 텍스트 내에서 실제 구현되는 지역의 ‘정체성’을 설명하기에는 부족함이 있다. 본고에서는 이러한 지역 문학을 논하는 기존의 방식을 넘어 ‘공간’→‘장소’로의 긍정적 의미 획득에 성공한 지역 문학 스토리텔링의 사례로 성북근현대문학관과 성북 문학에 대해 논하고자 한다.
작가의 태생지 여부보다 작품이 특정 지역을 얼마나 밀도 있게 재현하고 그 지역의 ‘장소정체성’을 문학적으로 (재)구성해 내는가는 지역 문학 연구에 있어 더 본질적인 기준이 될 필요가 있다. 일제강점기 ‘문인촌’이라는 별칭을 얻은 서울의 성북 지역은, 한국의 근현대문학을 대표하는 다수의 문인들이 거주한 지역이었을 뿐 아니라 여러 문학 텍스트 속에서 서사적 중요성을 지니고 의미화된 공간이라는 점에서 주목을 요한다.
본 연구에서는 유의미한 지역(문)학 연구의 방향성을 제안하기 위해 ‘어떤 서사 구성이 지역 정체성을 생산·재현하는가’에 주목하였다. 그리하여 성북 문학과 문인의 공간·장소를 통해 성북이 내포한 이중적·다층적 정체성을 입체적으로 드러내고자 하였다. ‘지역-문학-문인’의 결합을 통해 특정한 지역정체성이 생산·재생산되는 메커니즘을 통해 성북이라는 공간이 ‘문학적 장소’로 상상되고 구성된 담론의 형성 과정을 규명해 보고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Until now, regional literature studies have primarily judged regional affiliation based on whether an author was born or raised in a specific place. However, this approach centered on biological and geographical belonging falls short in explaining the ‘literary identity’ of a region as it is actually embodied within literary texts. This paper aims to go beyond existing approaches to regional literature and discuss the Seongbuk Modern and Contemporary Literature Museum and Seongbuk literature as a case study of regional literary storytelling that has successfully acquired a positive meaning as ‘place’→'space'.
The essential criterion for regional literature research should be not the author's birthplace, but how intensely the work recreates a specific region and how it literarily constructs that region's ‘sense of place’. The Seongbuk district of Seoul, nicknamed the ‘Writers’ Village' during the Japanese colonial period, deserves attention not only as the residence of numerous writers representing Korea's modern and contemporary literature but also as a space imbued with narrative significance and meaning within various literary texts.
This study examines the Seongbuk Modern and Contemporary Literature Museum, conceived based on this perspective, and analyzes the strategies and cultural-political implications of place representation centered on how Seongbuk is depicted in modern and contemporary literary works and the writers' ‘homes’. It seeks to elucidate the process by which the space of Seongbuk is imagined and constructed as a ‘literary place’ through the mechanism by which literature and space combine to produce and reproduce a specific regional identity.
