The purpose of the study consists in comparing and examining the images of a variety of heroes appearing in Samgukjiyuneui(삼국지연의), one of the old heroic Chinese novels, and in some Korean ones.
The sketch of the study is as follows:
1.Although we cannot say exactly when the Chinese novel was introduced to Korea, we assume from some ancient relevant documents that it was brought to this country during the reign of king Seonjo XIV of the Yi Dynasty. In connection with this historical fact, it is to be noted that almost all out heroic novels made an appearance following the two great wars of the Imjin(임진) war (the Hideyoshi Invasion) and the Byungia(병자)war. The wars broke out about the same period of the king. The introduction of the Chinese novel and the appearance of the heroic novels in Korea are supposed to have some similarity with each other in timing. (connection)
2.But, the heroic image of Korean novels and that of the Chinese navel are quite different from each other, which deserves our keen curiosity and is well worth making a serious study of.
3.Strong in the sense of justice are such heroes as Yoobi(유비), Kwanoonjang(관운장) Changbi(장비), Chegalyang(제갈량), Chocho(조조), etc. appearing in the Chinese novel. That's why they are well depicted as the characters who act on their own judgement or will.
4.On the other hand, their Korean counterparts, namely Lim Kyungup(임경업), Yoo Choongyul(유충렬), Cho ung(조웅), and so on place the greatest priority on their being loyal to their rulers, which invites us to think that their personality is not clearly described and that they do not act on their own will, but on the orders of those whom they faithfully serve.
5.We also find in the Korean novels that the heroes' eventful life and some sensational happenings resulting from love affairs wind up with happy endings, whose motive is to emphasize entertaining elements and ideal aspects in the make-up of the works, without de-emphasizing the inherent images of the principal heroes.
6.The background for the images taken on by the heroes is to be found from the fact that the society of the Yi dynasty was characterized by the social morality based on confucianism. The mainstream of the then confucian thought was to establish absolute obedience toward kings as the standard of judgement in the feudal society.
7.We never read ancient heroic Korean novels without discovering that heroes make a fortune after serving the country (the king in particular) with great distinction, meet arid marry beautiful women and live in happiness. Such development often to be found in heroic novels of ancient Korea is motivated by the miserable circumstances under which the reading people were living. which the writers must have taken into consideration from the beginning. It is commonly acknowledged that anyone who succeeds in life after hard struggle can be happy, which is a note-worthy point in making up heroic novels in ancient Korea.
