In the Flat Panel Display (FPD) field, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) has been glowing and developing more then 20 years and the application field of LCD is also very broad from Monitor, TV to PMP, Mobile display device. The market scale has been increasing very steeply, so, indeed, LCD is doing the leader device of FPD fieldBy the way, in the technical side, even though there has been achieving continuous research and development, still there are some problems to be solved like as wide view angle and high response time, high resolution, etc. Also, in the process side, innovative result of process development and cost reduction is not achieved from quality improvement and process simplify.Thus, in this thesis, in aspect of technical side, to achieve wide view angle and high response time, and in the process side, quality improvement and process simplify is included. Specifically, we use SiNx layer instead of traditional alignment layer of polyimide alignment layer. The SiNx layer is used for insulation layer now. By combined using for insulation layer and alignment layer, traditional alignment process is not needed. And by applying Ion Beam (IB) irradiation instead of rubbing treatment, the quality is improved by decreasing the defect of electrostatic defect, contamination defect.In this study, we investigated the LC alignment and pretilt angle generation with ion-beam irradiation on the two kinds of the polymer surface.It is studied that pretilt angle is changed by the side chain length of the polyimide surface in the conventional rubbing treatment and can be inferred that the mechanism of pretilt angle occurrence is occurred by the side chain.In regard of ion beam treatment, the pretilt angle of the polyimide surface is very small which is not related to the side chain length. It can be interpreted that the function of pretilt occurrence is damaged by the strong ion beam irradiation, so, pretilt angle is very small.Consequently, the mechanism of LC alignment occurrence is difference between rubbing and ion beam treatment at the polyimide surface. And alignment characteristic is changed by ion beam energy density. It means that we can gain the ion beam alignment characteristics at the uniform ion beam irradiation energy density. Besides thermal stability is also superior at ion beam treatment which is same as conventional rubbing treatment. On the other hands, the highest pretilt angle of the polyimide surface is occurred at the ion beam irradiation angle of 45 °, and the residual DC voltage characteristics is almost same as conventional rubbing treatment.The uniform alignment is attained at the irradiation angle of 45°on the SiNx thin film. On the ion-beam-irradiated SiNx thin film surface, LC molecules realign by the generating anisotropy. Thus it is very important that generating anisotropy on the ion-beam-irradiated SiNx thin film surface by the external energy like ion beam, mechanical friction, light etc.The pretilt angle is increased if the deviation distance of symmetry axis increase, based on incident angle 0°. It is called to crystal rotation method. As the experiment result, symmetry axis is nearly zero from the incident angle dependence. It is measured that pritilt angle is 0.1°.The V-T characteristic is very excellent and has similar characteristics as rubbing alignment. We obtained superior response time characteristics of 6.8ms with the irradiation energy of 1.8 keV at the incident angle of 45 °. Therefore, it is revealed that the alignment characteristics and electro-optic characteristics is achieved using the new alignment layer, SiNx which is normally used for gate insulation layer of inorganic thin film layer for application of LC display device.Consequently, the effectiveness of this thesis is process simplify of thin film transistor (TFT) LC and quality improvement, also, it can be contribute to advance for wide view angle and high response time like as In- Plain Switching (IPS),Fringe Field Switching (FFS) operating mode.
