Metaphors of Happiness in English and Korean

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper explores systematically recurring patterns of Korean expressions based on underlying conceptual metaphors of the emotion concepts of happiness. Within the framework of cognitive linguistics, widespread conceptual metaphors of happiness in the present-day Korean are analyzed and compared with those in English, based on data collected from a variety of genres including novels, scripts of movies and TV dramas, magazines, newspapers, and popular songs. The results of the analysis reveal that while Korean shares many conceptual metaphors with English, there are others which have not been identified in the literature for Korean or other languages. This paper provides empirical evidence for the claims of the contemporary theory of metaphor: that (1) conceptual metaphors play a significant role in discovering the structure and contents of emotion concepts;(2) emotion metaphors are motivated by physical, social, and cultural contexts.
