웬트가 양자로 간 까닭은? = STIP(1999) 이후 구성주의 방법론 이행에 관한 소고

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 웬트가 관념(ideas)이란 형이상학적 개념을 국제정치이론에 도입한 후 자신의 입장을 방어하기 위해 양자이론을 주된 인식토대로 삼는 과정을 추적하여 그 원인을 밝히는 것이 목적이다. 웬트는 자신이 제시한 사회이론의 방법론을 양자이론에서 추출된 핵심 개념을 사용하여 전개한다. 양자 이론이 제공한 가설이 사실이라면 사회적 삶, 즉 인간주체들의 기초 단위는 양자체계이다. 이는 은유적이거나 유추적이 아니라 실제적이다. 양자이론은 인간과 사회에 대한 새로운 해석적 가능성을 담고 있다. 웬트는 양자 가설이 사실이면 인간 행위를 설명하기 위해 단순히 은유 차원이 아니라 양자 존재론으로 갈 수밖에 없다고 판단한다. 물론 현재 시점에서 양자 가설이 참인지는 알 수 없다. 어떤 의미에서는 실재적 해석은 아직 확보되지 못하고 있다. 기껏해야 우리는 인간이란 마치 양자체제와 같다는 정도로 말할 수 있다. 웬트가 양자이론에 몰두한 것은 STIP(1999) 이후 웬트에게 가해진 비판에 대응하고 웬트 이론이 갖는 철학적 측면을 보강하기 위해서이다. 웬트는 자신에게 가해지는 여러 비판에 대해 자신의 구성주의 이론이 갖는 명제의 타당성과 유효성은 접어두고 대안적인 철학적 준거를 마련하려고 한다. 이것이 웬트가 양자사회이론에 몰두하는 이유이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explores the process in which Wendt intends to introduce the quantum theory into his constructivist methodology. Specifically it traces some major reasons why Wendt is devoting himself to devise ontological and epistemological implications provided by the quantum theorists. Adopting the quantum theory, Wendt is using key concepts and propositions in order to develop his social theory. The quantum theory propose the basic unit of human interaction are quantum micro-units. Wendt deals with the quantum theory in terms of not analogy or metaphor but substance in international relations. Wendt’s argument is neither to be proved nor to be falsified empirically. At best the behaviors and interactions of human social relations are liken to the quantum system. The main reason why Wendt’s interests moves into the quantum is to counteract some methodological critics regarding his philosophical weakness. Wendt puts aside the validity and efficacy of the constructivism. Alternatively he suggests a philosophical framework.
