Most of R.C piers in bridges may not sustain the seismic load in elastic region and to endure the seismic load elastically. the more big dimension is required. accordingly heavier load is induced. so earthquake designer should consider the ductility capacity of R.C piers in design to prevent collapse. at present provisions for earthquake design in specification allow the design that analysis is carried out to be based on elastic behavior of structure, on the other hand design is performed nonlinearly. this discrepancy is compensated by the response modification factor. in this paper, analysis and design are considered simultaneously by nonlinear analysis program and compare result with linear analysis to reveal the validity of response modification factor.
