‘날것’으로서 공공 공간과 타자의 복원 로열 페스티벌 홀을 사례로 = Unmediated public space and its political impact with the case of the Royal Festival Hall in London

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study conceptualizes the ‘unmediated’ public space as an alternative againstterritorialized ones from the view point that the publicness of public space is notgiven, but achieved by continual practices for the deterritorialization of public spaces.
By establishing the concept, I argue that the empty and value neutral image ofpublic space is ideological phantom, rather public space should be deterritorializedto include unmediated bodies and actions, and be filled up with them. The caseof this study, Royal Festival Hall in London, reveals its unmediatedness and a varietyof bodies and actions that can not be expected in other public spaces. What makesthis study significant in South Korean context is not merely the fact that the hallis a popular buzzing place, but it can include marginalized bodies. It could also,more generally, open up an alternative perspective about public space that enablespublics to encounter others, thereby create various ‘in-between’s.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글에서 필자는 ‘날것’으로서 공공 공간을 제안한다. 이를 통해 공공 공간의공공성은 지속적인 영토 해체를 통해서만 가능한 정치과정이라 주장한다. 이러한주장은 국유나 공유와 같은 소유형태와는 무관하게 권력의 매개가 동질화시키는공공 공간은 공공성을 상실할 수밖에 없다는 반성에서 출발한다. ‘날것’인 공공공간은 비어 있는 가치중립의 공간이 아니라, 타자의 신체와 행위로 가득한 매개없는 공간이라는 점을 아렌트의 공공 공간 논의로부터 도출한다. 사례 공간 로열페스티벌 홀(Royal Festival Hall)은 1983년 노동당 GLC의 오픈 포이어 정책으로권력의 매개가 제거된 곳으로 묘사된다. 필자는 이를 통해 매개가 제거된 ‘날것’의 공공 공간에서 비로소 드러나는 신체와 행위들을 소개한다. 이 사례를 통해신자유주의의 공간 사사화에 대응해 ‘날것’을 생산하고 지키는, 또한 공공 공간을영토화하는 시도에 대응하는 정치과정을 제안한다. 끝으로 삶의 지평에 타자를보이게 만드는 일이, 공공 공간을 동질화하고 개인을 고립시켜 온 한국 사회이과제이며, 이를 위해 ‘날것’인 공공 공간을 생산하는 적극적 실천이 필요하다고지적한다.
