Title: A Study on the Use of Humor for Effective Delivery in Preaching.
The importance of preaching is on the increase. A sermon consists of content and delivery. A lot of preachers concentrate on content. However, if delivery is not done well, the content, no matter how good it is, is of no use. Not only the content of a sermon, but also the delivery is important for sermons. Effective delivery is necessary for a sermon to move a person. Accordingly a preacher shall endeavor to deliver sermons effectively.
There are various elements that a preacher shall take into consideration for effective delivery, but this thesis has an interest to humor. Humor is a tool which is useful for effective delivery in sermons. The effects of humor are large and various. Humor helps in both the understanding and the concentration of the audience. People better understand when they are interested. Humor is effective when persuading a listener. A listener easily opens his/her mind because of humor. Humor narrows the distance between the preacher and the listener.
Humor gives profit to preacher's own self. Laughter reduces stress on a preacher and makes a good impression of the preacher on the audience. Sermons must be interesting. If a sermon is not interesting, listeners will turn their attention to something else that is more interesting.
This thesis examines theoretical backgrounds of humor in communication. It also takes a careful look at the use of humor for effective delivery in preaching. Furthermore, it analyzes the various uses of humor, employed by both Jesus and some of today's notable preachers.
Although there are pros and cons to humor, it is useful in effective delivery and plays an important role in sermons. Therefore, preachers should develop a sense of humor.
