With the advancement of feminist thought and the continuous growth of female creators within the film and television industry, women’s cinema has gradually become an important component of the contemporary film industry. In contrast to previous studies that primarily focused on feminist film theory and textual analysis, this study reexamines the development of women’s cinema from the perspectives of project development and industrial practice, exploring how female-centered works are transformed from creative concepts into market-oriented cultural products within the contemporary film industry.
First, through a literature review, this study examines the development of feminist film theory, the early practices of women’s cinema, and contemporary trends toward diversification within the field. It further analyzes the changes that women’s cinema has undergone in terms of creative content, industrial structures, and market environments. Subsequently, by investigating representative women’s films and the practical experiences of female filmmakers from both domestic and international contexts, this study explores the characteristics of women’s cinema in project development, market positioning, and distribution strategies.
In the practice-based research section, the short film *OPUS*, which was developed and produced with the participation of the author, is employed as a case study. The analysis focuses on project planning, production management, film festival distribution strategies, and plans for feature-length development. By examining the experiences and challenges encountered during the production process, this study investigates the development logic and commercialization pathways of female-centered film and television projects within the contemporary industrial environment.
The findings suggest that the significance of women’s cinema lies not only in its representation of female experiences and perspectives, but also in its capacity for production, circulation, and industrial integration within the broader film and television ecosystem. With the expansion of film festival networks, project pitching markets, and streaming platforms, female-centered works have gained broader opportunities for development and visibility. At the same time, short films have increasingly become an important entry point for emerging creators seeking access to the industry, playing a significant role in project incubation and feature-length development.
By integrating theoretical research with practice-based research, this study reconsiders the developmental trajectory of women’s cinema from the perspectives of producing and project development. The results indicate that women’s cinema is not only a form of cultural expression and artistic creation but also a category of audiovisual projects with considerable market value and long-term development potential. In the future, establishing an effective balance between creative expression and industrial operation will become a crucial direction for the sustainable development of female-centered film and television projects.
